Premature Ejaculation, what is it?

Premature Ejaculation (or PE) occurs when a man ejaculates in a very short period of time once engaging in intercourse. For a small number of men this is before entry. However, for most men it occurs when they ejaculate within a minute of vaginal entry. This can also apply to non-vaginal intercourse.

The time to ejaculate after vaginal penetration is known as the intravaginal ejaculatory latency time or IELT. You can similarly apply IELT to non-vaginal penetrative sex. It does not however work as a measure of pre-entry ejaculation. Or for non-penetrative sexual acts leading to ejaculation.

The definition of Premature Ejaculation is when the time to ejaculate is less than one minute after entry. This is clinically known as an intravaginal ejaculatory latency time or IELT. Yet the terminology does not correctly correspond with non-vaginal sex, or pre-entry ejaculation. An IELT of 60-90 seconds following the start of relations is known as having probable Premature Ejaculation.

Many men might judge an IELT of a few minutes to indicate PE. However, this is not clinically the case. Even if it does cause a feeling of shame or affects your sex life.

There are estimates that up-to 40% of men suffer from PE in some form. Since the man has little or no control over the process. It can often result in distress for the man or their sexual partner.

Just as with the process of erections, the process of ejaculation is multi-faceted. Thus, it can be both cut short and set off early by several circumstances. There is still a lack of data to show a concrete cause and effect of ejaculation. There are, however, thought to be several causal factors. These include levels of sexual anxiety, genital sensitivity and chemical receptor sensitivity.
