Cipla Limited

Cipla Limited are a multi-national pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Mumbai, India. Founded in 1935, they have continually led the field in generic and bulk manufacturing of medicines. They have offices throughout the world and multiple manufacturing facilities.

The company gained worldwide recognition for defying the US / EU dominated pharma market and supplying developing nations with essential generic drugs. These included antiretrovirals for HIV which would have cost vastly more from the big pharma companies.

Cipla led the drive to change India's patent laws in the 1960s. This change meant that rather than a chemical or drug being patented, only the method of manufacture was patentable in India. This change in the law allowed companies like Cipla and Ajanta Pharma to create generic versions of medicines. Without this, generic versions of Sildenafil Citrate would never have been made. Neither would thousands of people in developing countries have received life-preserving medications during the 80s and 90s.

This law allowing patenting on drugs, rather the methodology was re-introduced in 2005 following lobbying by big international pharmaceutical companies and pressure from trade partners.
